With over 100,000 active riders and 1,200 corporate accounts, Wheely is a profitable and rapidly growing scale-up, having raised $43M and generating over $100M in annual revenue. As we expand into new markets, including a recent launch in New York City, we are looking for a Director of Engineering to help shape our future.

The Director of Engineering will play a crucial role in rebuilding Wheely to create the fastest and most reliable ride-hailing app available. This involves ensuring that both the passenger and driver apps remain responsive even in challenging network conditions, while also prioritizing privacy as a core feature of our service. Responsibilities

  • Lead the technical direction of the platform, including making decisions on architectural approaches such as microservices.
  • Ensure the driver app functions effectively under adverse network conditions, managing real-time features like location tracking and dispatch.
  • Drive the engineering privacy strategy, focusing on the unique aspects of data flow within our systems compared to competitors.
  • Develop and enhance the internal agent harness to facilitate AI integration into workflows that previously required human input.
  • Help establish London as a significant engineering hub by participating in hiring, defining the scope of work for the London office, and cultivating a strong office culture.

Requirements

  • Experience in designing backend systems from scratch, with a focus on the trade-offs made during the design process.
  • Background in developing real-time systems at a consumer scale.
  • Several years of experience managing engineering teams, with a strong emphasis on making and defending hiring and firing decisions.

  • Professional development stipend.
  • Relocation support, including visa sponsorship and allowance.
