Our client specializes in developing innovative embedded and mission-critical technologies across various sectors including communications, electronics, and advanced engineering products. They are currently seeking an Embedded Software Engineer to join their team in Glasgow, Scotland, offering a hybrid working model that combines remote work with on-site presence.
Role Overview
The successful candidate will be part of a dynamic engineering team responsible for designing, developing, and maintaining embedded software and firmware for real-time systems. This role involves engaging with the entire product lifecycle, from initial architecture design and implementation to system integration, testing, and final release.
Key Responsibilities
- Develop embedded software and firmware primarily using C, ensuring high performance and reliability.
- Design and implement software architectures for new product development projects.
- Support system integration activities, including verification and validation processes to ensure software and hardware work seamlessly together.
- Enhance and maintain CI/CD pipelines, automate testing procedures, and improve overall software development workflows.
- Diagnose and troubleshoot hardware and software issues, providing effective solutions to maintain system integrity.
- Create comprehensive technical documentation, including design specifications, test reports, and user manuals.
- Conduct code reviews to uphold quality standards and mentor junior engineers to foster team growth.
Essential Skills and Experience
- Significant professional experience in embedded C development within a commercial environment.
- Hands-on experience working with real-time operating systems such as FreeRTOS, Zephyr, or similar platforms.
- Knowledge of embedded Linux systems, including kernel and device driver development.
- Experience working with ARM Cortex and/or RISC-V processor architectures.
- Familiarity with low-level hardware interfaces including SPI, I²C, UART, and ADC.
- Proficiency in hardware/software debugging using oscilloscopes and logic analyzers.
- Experience with version control systems like Git, and familiarity with CI/CD and automated testing frameworks.
- Strong Linux command-line skills and experience with GNU toolchains.
Desirable Skills
- Experience with scripting languages such as Python and Bash.
- Development of embedded Linux kernels or device drivers.
- Experience working within control systems or safety-critical industries such as aerospace, defense, or ESA projects.
- Familiarity with Agile/Scrum development methodologies and modern development practices like GitFlow.
