Anthropic is seeking an experienced Engineering Manager to lead the Safeguards Systems team, which is responsible for building and maintaining the real-time infrastructure that classifies AI outputs and ensures their safety before reaching users. This role involves owning the critical systems that make high-stakes decisions rapidly, accurately, and cost-effectively, such as determining which classifiers to activate and how to interpret their results. The manager will oversee the development of scalable, reliable infrastructure that supports the company’s safety protocols, working closely with other Safeguards teams, core infrastructure, and product groups to meet evolving safety requirements.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead and grow a team of engineers dedicated to creating essential real-time systems.
- Set the strategic vision and development plan for infrastructure, focusing on new features, robustness, and operational maturity.
- Drive scaling efforts through operational improvements, automation, and leveraging AI tools like Claude to accelerate development.
- Collaborate with Safeguards and infrastructure teams to translate complex requirements into effective design and implementation plans.
- Provide clarity and direction in an environment marked by ambiguity and continuous change.
- Promote an inclusive hiring and coaching culture, maintaining a high-performing team.
- Participate in broader engineering initiatives as part of Anthropicâ??s management community.
Minimum Qualifications
- Experience managing software engineering teams, including hiring, mentoring, and professional development.
- Strong technical expertise in high-availability distributed systems, with the ability to engage deeply in architecture and design discussions.
- Proven track record of delivering large-scale systems and implementing safe updates while maintaining high operational standards.
- Excellent communication skills, especially in explaining technical trade-offs to non-technical stakeholders.
- A genuine concern for the societal impacts of AI and a motivation to improve AI safety through engineering work.
Preferred Qualifications
- Over four years of management experience and more than ten years in software engineering industry roles.
- Experience building large-scale, high-availability systems, preferably within Trust and Safety contexts.
- Experience designing systems under strict privacy, compliance, or data governance constraints, such as zero data retention environments.
- Ability to transform systems into platforms that other teams can safely integrate into.
Compensation and Location
The annual salary for this position ranges from £325,000 to £390,000 GBP. The role requires a minimum of a bachelorâ??s degree or equivalent experience in a relevant field, demonstrated through coursework, training, or professional background. The company currently expects staff to work in the office at least 25% of the time, with some roles possibly requiring more in-person presence. The company offers visa sponsorship; however, sponsorship cannot be guaranteed for all candidates or roles.
