Deliveroo is seeking a skilled Golang Backend Engineer to join their new financial product fraud prevention team based in London. This team is responsible for safeguarding all financial transactions and products, including payouts, lending, and cash collection, across multiple brands such as Deliveroo, DoorDash, and Wolt. The role involves designing and deploying real-time fraud detection systems that operate with high throughput and low latency, ensuring that fraudulent activities are identified and blocked swiftly to prevent financial losses.
Overview of Responsibilities
- Develop and sustain high-performance backend services using Go, capable of processing financial events like payout enrollments, bank account linkages, credit applications, and transfers in real time.
- Create comprehensive fraud detection solutions, from signal collection to automated enforcement, that work across multiple brands and financial products.
- Enhance the existing shared fraud decision platform to ensure signals, rules, and models are reusable and consistent across different business units.
- Work closely with risk analysts, data scientists, and product managers to translate fraud patterns into effective detection rules and models, and determine when updates are necessary.
- Coordinate with teams responsible for account security, payments fraud, and financial products to integrate signals and improve detection accuracy.
- Contribute to the architectural development of the fraud detection infrastructure, supporting scalable and reliable systems with guidance from senior engineers.
- Write thoroughly tested, observable, and reliable code, maintaining high quality standards to prevent silent failures that could lead to losses.
- Participate in operational support, including on-call duties, to ensure system stability and quick incident response.
Candidate Requirements
- Between three and six years of professional software engineering experience, with a history of deploying backend services in production environments.
- At least one year of hands-on experience with Golang, or strong experience in another backend language with a quick learning mindset for Go.
- Solid understanding of low-latency, high-throughput distributed systems, with a focus on real-time decision-making within strict latency budgets.
- Experience working with SQL and NoSQL databases, and familiarity with event-driven architectures such as Kafka or similar messaging systems.
- Willingness to operate and support the systems you develop, including participating in on-call rotations, with a pragmatic approach to reliability and uptime.
- Ability to utilize AI tools in daily development and critically evaluate their outputs for correctness and effectiveness.
- Preferred experience includes fraud detection, risk management, payments, lending, or financial crime, especially related to money movement fraud, payout abuse, or bank account linking fraud.
- Additional skills such as experience with rules engines, real-time feature stores, or ML model serving are advantageous, along with familiarity with Kotlin, Java, Python, or Node.js.
- Experience working across multiple brands, regions, or regulatory environments is a plus, as is familiarity with cloud services like AWS or GCP.
What We Value
- A product-oriented mindset, with a focus on understanding the purpose behind tasks and taking responsibility for outcomes rather than just output.
- Comfort with ambiguity, as the team is still defining its scope and responsibilities, and your input will help shape the future.
- A history of owning projects or features from start to finish, especially in fast-paced settings.
- Clear, proactive communication and a collaborative attitude, essential for working across multiple teams and time zones.
- An analytical mindset, enjoying thinking like an attacker to identify potential fraud vulnerabilities.
