Bloomberg is seeking an experienced Licensing Counsel to join their Legal & Compliance Department in London, focusing on Enterprise Data and Index products. This role involves acting as a key legal partner to Bloombergâ??s data, index, and technology business units, providing expert guidance on complex licensing and commercial transactions. The successful candidate will be responsible for drafting and negotiating a wide range of agreements with customers and vendors globally, ensuring that contracts align with business objectives while managing legal risks effectively.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead negotiations and draft agreements related to Bloombergâ??s data, index, and technology products, ensuring clarity and legal soundness.
  • Serve as a trusted advisor to product, sales, and business teams, offering strategic legal insights on licensing structures and commercial deals.
  • Identify and address emerging legal risks associated with evolving technologies such as generative AI and agentic AI, developing practical solutions to mitigate these risks.
  • Collaborate with Legal, Compliance, and Risk teams on issues related to intellectual property, data privacy, security, and regulatory compliance.
  • Develop scalable legal risk management tools, frameworks, and processes to support efficient and consistent legal operations across teams.
  • Keep abreast of legal and regulatory changes affecting technology, AI, data, and financial products, assessing their impact on Bloombergâ??s business.
  • Mentor and oversee the work of the Negotiations team, providing training and guidance on complex contractual matters.
  • Use sound commercial judgment to help stakeholders balance legal risks with operational and strategic priorities, facilitating well-informed decision-making.

Candidate Requirements

  • Legal qualification such as a JD with active membership in the New York Bar or as a solicitor in England and Wales, or an equivalent qualification.
  • Minimum of seven yearsâ?? experience in commercial licensing, ideally within a law firm or in-house legal team at a technology, fintech, or financial services company.
  • Proven ability to negotiate and lead complex licensing transactions independently.
  • Deep understanding of commercial contracts, intellectual property law, and the legal landscape surrounding data and technology in financial markets.
  • Excellent communication skills, capable of translating complex legal issues into clear advice for diverse teams.
  • Strong commercial judgment with the ability to weigh legal risks against business goals effectively.
  • Collaborative approach with the ability to influence and build credibility across functions and seniority levels.
  • Practical, solutions-focused mindset, capable of managing multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment.

Preferred Skills and Experience

  • Experience advising financial services, data, or fintech companies, with knowledge of their regulatory environments.
  • Experience negotiating index licensing agreements and understanding related intellectual property considerations.
  • Experience engaging with governmental or regulatory bodies within the EMEA region.
  • Track record of providing clear, commercially focused legal advice under pressure, especially for high-value transactions.
  • Ability to interpret and implement evolving legal and regulatory requirements into practical guidance.
  • Interest in leveraging technology and process improvements to enhance legal support efficiency.
  • Strong organizational skills, attention to detail, and experience mentoring other legal professionals.
  • Familiarity with legal issues related to AI, data use, and emerging technologies in the context of financial products.
