Join Arm’s CPU validation team as a Low-Level Software Engineer focused on operating system-based testing within our Cambridge office. This role offers an exciting opportunity for individuals passionate about the intersection of hardware and software, particularly in the context of commercial processor development. The team is responsible for ensuring ARM CPUs can successfully boot operating systems and run real-world software applications. Your work will involve early software bring-up on ARM hardware, validating hardware functionality, and identifying both hardware and software bugs. Collaboration across distributed teams and with hardware, software, and architecture colleagues is a key aspect of this role, enabling the sharing of tools and best practices.
Key Responsibilities
- Develop detailed validation test scenarios for OS-based testing, ensuring they cover the necessary features and align with the overall test plan and architecture specifications.
- Configure and bring up OS environments and test payloads on target hardware platforms, execute regression tests, and analyze results to detect functional or stability issues.
- Debug validation failures, whether software, OS, or hardware-related, and perform root cause analysis.
- Document defects thoroughly, including failure analysis, reproduction steps, logs, and supporting evidence, and work with development teams to resolve issues.
- Track validation progress, identify gaps in test coverage or quality, and communicate findings, risks, and status updates to stakeholders.
Qualifications and Skills
- A university degree or equivalent experience in Computer Science, Electronic Engineering, or related fields.
- Experience in software development with C language, along with some knowledge of low-level assembler programming.
- A good understanding of CPU architecture and micro-architecture features such as caches, MMU, SMP, cache coherency, and pipelines.
- Familiarity with operating system kernels and their hardware exploitation techniques.
- Strong debugging skills to analyze complex issues across hardware and software boundaries.
- Excellent documentation skills for defect reporting and analysis.
Desirable Skills
- Experience with ARM instruction set architecture.
- Knowledge of scripting languages such as Python.
- Exposure to CPU verification processes or Electronic Design Automation (EDA) tools.
