Our client is seeking a passionate Opto Mechanical Engineer to join their team in Oxfordshire, England. This role involves transforming optical concepts into durable, manufacturable hardware solutions. The successful candidate will be responsible for designing, analyzing, prototyping, and integrating high-precision optical and photonic assemblies.

Key Responsibilities

  • Designing detailed mechanical components and assemblies for optical systems, including mounts, housings, brackets, and alignment stages, using SolidWorks.
  • Utilizing Zemax or similar optical software to model optical systems, evaluate tolerances, and ensure designs meet optical performance standards.
  • Converting optical requirements into practical mechanical designs that are suitable for manufacturing processes.
  • Performing tolerance stack-up analyses to understand the impact of manufacturing variations on optical alignment and system performance.
  • Building and testing prototypes within laboratory environments to validate design concepts.
  • Supporting the alignment and integration of fiber-to-chip and free-space optical components, ensuring precise positioning.
  • Investigating mechanical and thermal effects such as drift, deformation, stress, and misalignment that could influence optical system performance.
  • Working closely with manufacturing teams and suppliers to ensure designs are optimized for production and assembly.

Candidate Requirements

  • Hands-on experience with SolidWorks for mechanical design and drafting tasks.
  • Experience with Zemax or similar optical simulation software for modeling and analysis.
  • Strong understanding of optical principles, including alignment, tolerancing, focusing, and beam propagation.
  • Background in opto-mechanical, mechanical, or optical engineering, gained through professional roles or significant project work.
  • Experience conducting mechanical and optical tolerance analyses to predict system performance issues.
  • Ability to work practically with prototypes, laboratory equipment, and manufacturing processes.
  • A methodical approach to problem-solving and troubleshooting complex technical challenges.
