This role offers an exciting opportunity to contribute to the protection of cutting-edge technologies and to help shape Armâ??s intellectual property strategy.

Role Overview

Our in-house Intellectual Property (IP) team is responsible for building and managing Armâ??s global patent portfolio, supporting innovation protection across the company. As we expand our patent team, we are creating a new position focused on hands-on patent drafting and prosecution. Unlike traditional roles, this position emphasizes direct involvement in drafting patent applications and managing their prosecution, allowing you to focus on the craft of patent law while working on technically challenging inventions at the forefront of technology.

Key Responsibilities

  • Work directly with inventors and engineering teams to understand new technological developments and innovations.
  • Identify inventions suitable for patent protection and assist in capturing these ideas effectively.
  • Draft comprehensive patent applications covering areas such as microelectronics, semiconductor technology, computer architecture, software, and AI.
  • Manage the prosecution process of patent filings before authorities like the UKIPO, EPO, and other patent offices, ensuring timely and strategic patent prosecution.
  • Collaborate with external patent counsel when necessary, providing guidance and oversight on patent prosecution matters.
  • Help establish and develop Armâ??s internal patent drafting and prosecution capabilities from scratch, including workflow development and process improvements.
  • Engage with inventors to foster collaboration, understand the technical context, and align patent strategies with business objectives.
  • Participate in broader patent portfolio activities such as invention harvesting, strategic planning, and patent analytics, based on your interests and experience.

Candidate Profile

  • Qualified as a CPA or EPA patent attorney with several years of experience, or someone seeking to focus on patent drafting and prosecution without management duties.
  • Strong technical background in electronics, physics, computer science, or related fields.
  • Possession of a university degree in Electronics, Computer Science, Physics, or similar; other relevant qualifications will be considered if technical expertise is demonstrated.
  • Enjoyment of hands-on patent drafting and prosecution work, with a desire to continue in this core activity.
  • Ability to work effectively within an in-house environment, understanding the strategic importance of patents and innovation management.
  • Excellent communication skills for collaboration with inventors, external counsel, and internal teams.
  • Proactive attitude with an interest in process development, leveraging AI tools, and improving patent workflows.

What We Offer

  • The chance to work on innovative inventions in computing, semiconductor, software, and AI fields, maintaining a hands-on role in patent drafting and prosecution.
  • A role free from client billing pressures, focusing instead on patent quality and strategic value.
  • The opportunity to help build a new in-house patent team, influencing processes and strategic direction.
  • Close collaboration with inventors and technical teams, providing insight into the company’s technological landscape.
  • Potential involvement in additional areas such as invention harvesting, patent strategy, and IP analytics.
  • Competitive annual salary between £97,750 and £132,250.
  • A supportive, innovative, and diverse working environment that values collaboration and individual growth.
  • Flexible hybrid working arrangements designed to balance face-to-face interaction with remote work, tailored to team needs.
