The role of Principal Design Engineer at Arm in Cambridge involves engaging in the development and integration of complex system-on-chip (SoC) subsystems, with a focus on intellectual property (IP) cores. The successful candidate will work within a dynamic team to create high-performance, power-efficient processing systems used across various sectors such as IoT, automotive, client computing, and infrastructure.
Key Responsibilities
- Participate in integrating IP blocks and designing logic for sophisticated SoC subsystems, leveraging your knowledge of subsystems and architecture.
- Review incoming IP functionalities and interfaces, ensuring compatibility and seamless integration with other system components.
- Develop detailed microarchitecture specifications and RTL code, primarily using Verilog or SystemVerilog, to implement subsystem designs.
- Propose system-level improvements and refinements to IP teams based on integration insights and practical application needs.
- Conduct static design verification checks such as CDC, RDC, X-prop, Lint, and UPF, addressing any issues that arise during these processes.
- Perform design reviews, debug issues, and implement fixes to maintain system integrity and performance standards.
- Collaborate with performance and power analysis teams to evaluate KPIs, identify system bottlenecks, and suggest optimizations.
- Identify opportunities to enhance design methodologies and workflows, contributing to team efficiency.
- Support and mentor team members to ensure project milestones are achieved, managing tasks alongside planning and scheduling activities.
Required Skills and Experience
- A degree in Electrical or Computer Engineering, or equivalent experience in digital hardware design.
- Proficiency in Verilog HDL and verification methodologies, with experience in static design checks like CDC, RDC, X-prop, Lint, and UPF.
- Experience in creating comprehensive design specifications and delivering RTL subsystems within deadlines.
- Strong understanding of synthesis, timing analysis, and power management techniques relevant to SoC development.
- Excellent communication and teamwork skills, with a proven ability to collaborate across disciplines.
- Demonstrated ability to analyze high-level trade-offs related to power, performance, and area, and to drive development efforts accordingly.
Preferred Skills and Experience
- Experience with ARM-based designs or ARM system architectures.
- Knowledge of AMBA protocols such as AXI, AHB, APB, ACE-Lite, or CHI.
- Familiarity with processor subsystems, interconnects, security modules, PCIe, and system power management flows.
- Proficiency in scripting languages like Perl or Python.
