Our client, an innovative startup specializing in optical technologies, is seeking a talented Senior Optical Design Engineer to join their team based in London. This role focuses on designing and optimizing optical systems primarily using Zemax OpticStudio, with responsibilities spanning from lens development to beam shaping. The ideal candidate will be capable of bridging the gap between simulation, manufacturing, and overall system performance, ensuring that optical designs meet stringent product requirements.

Key Responsibilities

• Develop and refine optical systems through detailed design work in Zemax OpticStudio, ensuring they align with product specifications.
• Create custom lens designs and implement beam shaping techniques to enhance system functionality.
• Conduct optical tolerancing analyses and evaluate tolerance stack-up to guarantee manufacturability and performance consistency.
• Translate product needs into clear optical performance goals and define acceptance criteria for quality control.
• Collaborate with mechanical engineers to integrate optical components with mounting and packaging solutions, facilitating ease of assembly.
• Make strategic design decisions considering manufacturing processes, costs, and supplier capabilities.
• Work with optics suppliers to specify tolerances, assess feasibility, and ensure design compliance.
• Validate simulation models against prototype data and assembly outcomes to confirm design accuracy.
• Support production-focused development efforts aimed at reducing costs and maintaining high quality standards.
• Review optical designs critically and participate in technical decision-making processes within the team.

Candidate Requirements

• Three to five years of professional experience in optical design and engineering roles.
• Proficiency in Zemax OpticStudio for designing and tolerancing optical systems.
• Experience in designing lenses for optical systems or camera assemblies.
• Strong understanding of tolerance stack-up analysis and its impact on system performance.
• Ability to connect optical design considerations with manufacturing, cost, and assembly constraints.
• Experience evaluating the effects of thermal and mechanical factors on optical performance.
• Experience working with optics suppliers and production environments.
• Excellent communication skills and ability to document technical details effectively.
• Knowledge of Python for analysis or modeling is a plus.
• Understanding of optimizing optical designs for manufacturability and cost efficiency.
