Proton is seeking an experienced Senior Rust Engineer to join their Proton Drive team, a key part of Proton’s mission to build a more private and secure internet. The Team and Role
The role involves joining the Proton Drive team, focusing on the development of core libraries in Rust that underpin Proton Drive’s client applications. These libraries are central to Proton Drive SDKs, which facilitate cross-platform functionality and integration with other Proton services and third-party applications. The engineer will ensure that these libraries are compatible across platforms, secure, and optimized for performance.
Technical Environment
The team uses standard tools such as Git, GitLab, GitHub, GitLab CI, Jira, and Confluence for collaboration and project management. The tech stack includes C# and TypeScript, with plans to incorporate Rust for SDK development to streamline SDK implementations across platforms. Monitoring and issue tracking are handled via Grafana, Prometheus, and Sentry. Testing involves unit, integration, and end-to-end tests using Playwright.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead the design and development of core Rust libraries that form the backbone of Proton Drive’s applications.
- Ensure cross-platform compatibility and high performance on web browsers and mobile devices.
- Perform code reviews, optimize code, and maintain high standards of quality and security.
- Collaborate with frontend and mobile developers to integrate core libraries seamlessly.
- Implement security best practices to uphold Proton’s reputation for privacy and data protection.
- Develop testing strategies to ensure library reliability and robustness.
- Create comprehensive documentation to support other developers and future maintenance.
- Stay updated with the latest in Rust and related technologies, proposing innovative improvements.
Candidate Profile
- Minimum of five years of professional experience in software development, with a focus on Rust.
- Deep expertise in Rust language features, concurrency, and ownership models.
- Experience developing libraries for both web and mobile platforms.
- Strong teamwork and communication skills.
- Excellent problem-solving abilities and troubleshooting skills.
- Understanding of secure coding practices and commitment to privacy.
- Proficiency with version control systems, especially Git.
- Educational background in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or related fields.
- Bonus: Experience with mobile development, including iOS (Swift) or Android (Kotlin), especially in building or integrating SDKs with Rust.
