Senior Software Engineer, Android SDUI Overview

Deliveroo is seeking a talented Senior Android Engineer to join our SDUI team, focusing on building and scaling our server-driven UI platform. This platform enables seamless deployment of UI updates across iOS, Android, and Web without the need for redeploying the entire app, ensuring high performance and visual consistency. The role is based in our London office with a hybrid work arrangement, typically requiring three days in the office each week.

About the Role

As a member of the SDUI team, you will be responsible for the Android rendering layer and the backend services that support it. Your work will ensure that all consumer surfaces built on this platform are fast, accurate, and visually indistinguishable from native implementations. Your daily tasks will include designing, developing, and improving the Android SDUI renderer using Kotlin, as well as backend components built with Golang and Protobuf to handle complex, real-time UI updates at scale.

You will lead architectural improvements, conduct code reviews, and ensure the system remains maintainable and operationally healthy as adoption grows. Collaboration with iOS and Web renderer engineers, product managers, and designers will be key to planning rollouts, making platform decisions, and shaping the product roadmap. You will also own large initiatives from conception through deployment, including enhancing motion and interaction quality to match native experiences and migrating away from legacy systems.

Mentoring colleagues and participating in hiring processes will be part of your responsibilities to foster team growth and excellence.

What Weâ??re Looking For

• More than five years of experience developing Android applications at scale, with deep expertise in Kotlin and Jetpack Compose.
• Backend development experience, especially with Golang, Kotlin, and Protobuf, with the flexibility to work across client and server codebases.
• Experience with server-driven or declarative UI systems, with a strong interest in advancing declarative rendering techniques; familiarity with Litho or similar DSL-based renderers is a bonus.
• A product-focused approach, designing platform services that support efficient development workflows.
• Demonstrated ownership of technical projects, guiding implementation and design decisions for platform components used by multiple teams.
• Excellent communication skills, capable of collaborating across time zones with iOS, Web, backend teams, and product managers.
• A dedication to high-quality software craftsmanship, including writing readable, well-tested code.
• Bonus skills include experience with Figma-to-code workflows, design tokens, theming systems, or accessibility considerations in mobile rendering.
