Senior Software Engineer, R2 Gateway Overview

Cloudflare is seeking a highly skilled Senior Software Engineer to join the R2 Gateway team, focusing on building and maintaining the request-facing layer of Cloudflare’s object storage platform, R2. This platform offers developers durable, reliable storage solutions with no egress fees, integrated seamlessly with Cloudflare’s extensive global network and developer tools.

The R2 Gateway team is responsible for the API surface that handles all object storage operations, including put, get, list, and delete requests. The team ensures strict compatibility with the S3 API standard while delivering low-latency, highly available access at a global scale. As part of this role, you will design, implement, and operate the API gateway, which manages critical functions such as authentication, request routing, rate limiting, and error handling. You will oversee the entire request path, from initial request to interaction with storage and metadata layers, ensuring correctness and performance.

In this position, you will build production services using Cloudflare Workers and Kubernetes, capable of handling high request throughput with strong guarantees of system availability and data durability. You will take ownership of projects from conception through deployment and monitoring, continuously working to improve system reliability, speed, and observability. Rapidly adapting to legacy and unfamiliar codebases and reducing operational overhead will be key responsibilities. Additionally, you will participate in on-call rotations, resolve incidents efficiently, and produce postmortem reports to enhance system resilience.

AI tools are an integral part of the workflow, and you will be expected to leverage AI extensively to accelerate development, debugging, and operational tasks. Collaboration with teams across storage infrastructure, metadata, networking, and other platform groups is essential for coordinating API specifications, capacity planning, and strategic initiatives.

Qualifications and Skills

• Proficiency in programming languages such as Rust, TypeScript, Go, or similar.
• Minimum of five years of experience working on large-scale distributed systems, especially those involving request paths with strict latency and reliability requirements.
• Understanding of cloud infrastructure concepts, including object storage, HTTP/API gateways, edge computing, and service-oriented architectures.
• Experience designing and operating high-throughput APIs with features like authentication, routing, rate limiting, and API versioning, ensuring backward compatibility.
• Strong knowledge of reliability practices, including monitoring, alerting, performance tuning, and incident response.
• Excellent communication skills, capable of explaining complex technical decisions clearly and working effectively across teams.
• Comfortable working with AI coding tools as part of daily development routines.
• Experience with the S3 API, Cloudflare Workers, Durable Objects, or similar edge platforms is a plus.
