Senior Systems Engineer Overview

Our client, a space engineering organization based in Scotland, specializes in developing and delivering small satellite platforms, missions, and associated space systems. They are seeking a Senior Systems Engineer to provide technical leadership and systems engineering expertise across various spacecraft projects and major technical work packages. This role involves maintaining technical coherence across requirements, architecture, interfaces, system budgets, verification, and operations, guiding multidisciplinary engineering teams through complex technical decisions.

Key Responsibilities

• Offering technical leadership and systems engineering support throughout spacecraft projects, ensuring consistency between requirements, architecture, interfaces, and operational procedures.
• Defining and managing spacecraft and mission architectures, including concepts of operations (CONOPS), product breakdown structures, and designing power, data, communication, grounding, and operational systems.
• Leading the development and management of system and mission requirements, ensuring traceability, verification, and compliance across the project lifecycle.
• Managing interfaces between spacecraft subsystems and across boundaries such as platform-payload, space-ground, launch, and suppliers.
• Conducting multidisciplinary technical trade-offs, balancing performance, feasibility, cost, schedule, and risk factors.
• Leading or supporting system budget analysis covering mass, power, data, delta-V, and RF link performance.
• Planning and overseeing system verification and validation activities, including test planning, acceptance criteria, and verification evidence assessment.
• Supporting spacecraft integration, qualification, and acceptance testing, including resolving complex test anomalies.
• Reviewing engineering outputs, communicating technical status and risks, mentoring engineers, and contributing to bid and proposal efforts.

Candidate Profile and Requirements

• A relevant degree in engineering, physics, or a comparable technical discipline, or equivalent professional experience.
• Experience in systems engineering for complex, multidisciplinary systems, especially within space or aerospace sectors.
• Proven ability to manage a subsystem or major work package through all phases from requirements to verification.
• Expertise in defining and managing system architectures across hardware, software, payload, ground, and operational components.
• Strong skills in requirements management, traceability, verification, and compliance assurance.
• Experience managing complex interfaces and producing or reviewing Interface Control Documents.
• Ability to independently manage system budgets and perform technical trade-offs.
• Knowledge of spacecraft system verification, validation, and test planning, including support for assembly, integration, and testing activities.
• Familiarity with high-reliability engineering environments, mission analysis, FDIR, FMECA, MBSE, and standards such as ECSS or spacecraft hardware.
