Google is seeking a talented and experienced Software Engineer to join the Android Digital Wellbeing team based in London, UK. This role involves developing innovative features aimed at helping users build healthier relationships with their devices and digital experiences. As part of this team, you will work on creating intuitive, high-performance user interfaces for Google’s first-party Android applications, leveraging Kotlin, Java, and modern Android UI frameworks.
Your responsibilities will include integrating on-device machine learning and generative AI solutions to deliver proactive, engaging, and privacy-preserving features. You will be tasked with translating complex behavioral and psychological challenges into robust system-level solutions that respect user privacy. Collaboration is key, and you will work closely with global teams across UX Design, UX Research, Data Science, and Privacy to ensure cohesive product development. Additionally, you will partner with core Android teams in the US and the Kids and Families team to deliver consistent, platform-wide user experiences.
In this role, you will lead rapid prototyping efforts, conduct framework experiments, and participate in technical architecture reviews during early-stage product development. Your code must be clean, efficient, and well-tested, and you will be involved in design reviews, code reviews, and agile workflows to maintain high engineering standards.
Qualifications
- A bachelorâ??s degree or equivalent practical experience in software engineering.
- At least five years of experience in software development, with proficiency in programming languages such as Java.
- Hands-on experience with Android application development and familiarity with Android SDKs.
- Experience with Googleâ??s app technologies is preferred.
- A strong passion for digital wellbeing initiatives and improving user health with technology.
- An interest in AI adoption and emerging technological trends.

As a software engineer on the Digital Wellbeing team, you will work on projects that empower users to manage their device usage consciously. The teamâ??s mission is to address challenges such as digital distraction, cognitive overload, and compulsive engagement by creating tools that give users genuine control over their attention and device habits. Android, powering over 3 billion devices worldwide, is central to this effort, providing a platform for OEMs and developers to build accessible, compelling devices and applications for users globally.
Key Responsibilities
- Develop engaging, high-performance user experiences for Android applications using Kotlin/Java and modern UI frameworks.
- Integrate AI and machine learning solutions on-device to enhance user interactions proactively.
- Transform complex behavioral insights into privacy-conscious, reliable system solutions.
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams across UX, Data Science, and Privacy to deliver cohesive features.
- Partner with core Android teams and the Kids and Families team to ensure platform-wide consistency.
- Lead rapid prototyping, experiment with frameworks, and review technical architectures during early product phases.
- Write high-quality, maintainable, and thoroughly tested code across the software stack.
