Join Armâ??s Hardware Platform team as a Staff Hardware Platform Design Engineer, where you will play a key role in shaping the next generation of hardware solutions for embedded systems. Based in Manchester or Cambridge, you will work on developing physical hardware platforms centered around Armâ??s custom system-on-chip (SoC) and FPGA technologies. These platforms are crucial for software development and validation activities, supporting both internal teams and external partners in the industry.

Key Responsibilities

  • Define and specify new hardware platform requirements, ensuring they meet project goals and performance standards.
  • Design and develop hardware solutions, including schematics and PCB layouts, for advanced embedded compute systems.
  • Oversee the commissioning and testing of new hardware platforms to validate their functionality and performance.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams, including software, verification, and system architecture groups, to ensure hardware designs align with overall project objectives.
  • Establish and enforce PCB routing standards, topologies, and signal integrity guidelines to optimize high-speed data transfer and power delivery.
  • Conduct initial signal integrity (SI) and power integrity (PI) analyses to predict and mitigate potential issues early in the design process.
  • Work closely with hardware leads to assist with project planning, scheduling, and resource estimation to ensure timely delivery of hardware solutions.
  • Engage in continuous improvement initiatives to enhance design processes, tools, and hardware quality.
  • Participate in design reviews, documentation, and technical reporting to communicate design decisions and test results effectively.

Required Skills and Experience

  • A solid understanding of electronics, embedded systems, and complex PCB design involving high-pin-count SoC and LSI devices such as FPGAs and CPLDs.
  • Expertise in high-speed digital design, including familiarity with standards like PCIe Gen 5/6/7 and LPDDR5/6 memory technologies.
  • Deep knowledge of signal integrity and power integrity techniques, applying these holistically during board design.
  • Experience defining PCB stack-ups, impedance-controlled routing, and managing complex topologies.
  • Proficiency with EDA tools such as Cadence OrCAD CIS and Allegro PCB suite for schematic and layout tasks.
  • Hands-on experience with embedded hardware debugging using oscilloscopes, logic analyzers, VNAs, and power supplies.
  • Excellent communication skills, capable of producing clear documentation, specifications, and test plans.
  • A proactive, delivery-focused approach with a structured problem-solving mindset.
  • Desirable: Experience with full hardware development lifecycle, including NPI, working with ODMs and external partners.
  • Desirable: Knowledge of programming languages like C, C++, Python, and mechanical design concepts including thermal management.
