Anthropic is seeking a highly skilled and experienced Software Engineer to join their Continuous Integration (CI) team within the Developer Productivity organization. The primary focus of this role is to develop and maintain robust, scalable CI infrastructure that enables hundreds of engineers to ship code efficiently and safely to production environments. The CI team manages critical systems including automated testing frameworks, code quality assurance tools, and complex merge queue management, all designed to support rapid growth and high reliability.

Key Responsibilities

  • Design and implement highly reliable and scalable CI systems capable of supporting thousands of daily builds across multiple cloud providers.
  • Create intelligent test selection mechanisms that optimize CI run times while maintaining high standards of code quality.
  • Develop automation for incident response, including features like cluster load shedding, automatic recovery procedures, and enhanced observability tools.
  • Enhance the stability of test infrastructure by implementing flaky test detection, quarantine systems, and effective test state management.
  • Build and improve CI pipelines that facilitate automated testing, code integration, and quality checks within a large monorepo environment.
  • Manage complex branching strategies and merge queues to ensure high-quality code integration at scale.
  • Support internal teams by automating routine tasks and reducing operational friction to boost developer productivity.

Candidate Profile and Requirements

  • More than ten years of relevant experience in designing, building, and operating large-scale CI/CD systems in a professional setting.
  • Extensive experience with CI orchestration tools such as Buildkite, Jenkins, GitHub Actions, or similar platforms.
  • A passion for improving developer workflows and reducing friction in the software development process.
  • Experience with container orchestration technologies like Kubernetes at a large scale.
  • Excellent communication skills and a collaborative mindset to work effectively with internal teams and partners.
  • A strong focus on system reliability, aiming to build systems that are resilient and predictable in failure modes.
  • Preferred experience includes managing merge queues and branch workflows at scale, developing intelligent test infrastructure, and creating CLI tools or developer-facing automation services.
  • Proficiency with GitHub API and automation scripting.

Benefits and Compensation

  • Annual salary between £325,000 and £390,000 GBP, commensurate with experience.
  • Hybrid working model requiring staff to be present in the office at least 25% of the time, with some roles possibly needing more in-office work.
