Deliveroo is seeking a highly skilled Staff Software Engineer to join the Dev Environments team, which is part of DoorDash’s Foundations group (Platform Engineering). This team is responsible for creating and maintaining the developer experience for over 5,000 engineers across multiple companies, including Deliveroo, Wolt, and DoorDash. The primary mission is to enable fast, efficient, and high-quality development workflows by removing friction in the development process, whether developers are working locally or remotely.

Role Overview

As a Staff Engineer in this team, you will be recognized as an expert in the developer environment space, covering local and remote development workflows, devcontainers, IDE and remote backend integrations, and how these components interconnect. You will own accountability for outcomes that span multiple teams, set the technical direction for the team’s roadmap, and resolve complex cross-cutting technical challenges that require deep expertise. Mentoring senior and mid-level engineers, you will help elevate the overall engineering standards and practices within the organization.

Key Responsibilities

• Technical Architecture: Lead the design of systems that support thousands of engineers in developing and deploying code, including local and remote development containers, remote IDE and VM lifecycle management, and the entire local-to-remote development loop. Develop tooling for monorepos at scale, establishing organization-wide standards rather than patchwork solutions. Create solutions that provision production-like environments rapidly, maintain networked environment states, and simulate local development experiences reliably and cost-effectively for large-scale use. Design environments that support AI agents as first-class users, enabling sandbox environments that can spin up on demand, run in parallel, and safely share repositories, with support for IDE, CLI, or Slack-based interactions.
• Cross-Functional Collaboration & Leadership: Work with teams that do not typically sit close to each other, such as Security, Infrastructure, and Product Engineering, to align on complex, ambiguous problems. Lead design reviews, mentor engineers, and help set hiring standards. Support onboarding of senior engineers and influence the technical roadmap across multiple teams.
• Technical Skills & Experience: Demonstrated success in delivering production systems and leading initiatives with impact at the group level. Hands-on experience with developer tooling languages and infrastructure-as-code tools like Terraform. Knowledge of Kubernetes management, multi-tenant workloads, autoscaling, ephemeral environments, and cost management. Familiarity with cloud networking, secure traffic routing, and integrating AI tooling into developer workflows, including local and remote implementations.
